5 Book Recommendations for Your Winter Hibernation

In the month of November I began planning for my December *hibernation*. By this I mean that in the month of December I am clearing my calendar of unnecessary business in my evenings, to the best of my ability, and unplugging from social media for 31 days. I hope that my evenings will be filled with – in part – lots of reading and spiritual disciplines!

Below I have included a list of 5 books that you may want to consider adding to your reading list during this winter month/season. These ideas cover a wide range. I’ll breifly explain underneath each link below!

  1. “Holiday Homes Adult Coloring Book: Festive Cozy Houses for Yuletide and Winter Holidays”
I purchased this coloring book for myself. I’m looking forward to a less academic activity this winter season in my down time! This is the one I chose:

  2. “Does God Desire All to Be Saved?” by John Piper
I read this VERY short book (originally an essay/article, if memory serves well) over the summer as I was investigating the doctrine of election. Great, easy-to-read book with a Scriptural focus and approach. Worth the read!

  3. “The Mystery of Christ, His Covenant, and His Kingdom” by Samuel Renihan
At the time of wrtiting this I am only two chapters away from finishing this book and I think it’s safe to say I would recommend it at this point. Very insightful in how God’s covenants are purposed and progressive. It’s definitely a mind-enganging read/more academic. Very insightful and had me saying, “Ahh! That makes this passage make MUCH more sense to me!”

  4. “Taking God At His Word: Why the Bible Is Knowable, Necessary, and Enough, and What That Means for You and Me” by Kevin DeYoung
Kevin DeYoung is my favorite author of the year. I “discovered” him this year and have purchased many books of his since. He has a way of communicating biblical truths in easy-to-understand ways coupled with application. Check out this book, which is a foundational book to understanding Scripture, along with his other works!

  5. “ESV Large Print Value Thinline Bible (TruTone, Turquoise, Emblem Design)”
Last but not least, the Bible. This list would be a waste if I didn’t encourage you to join me in prioritizing reading Scripture during this “un-plugged” time we are setting aside. I love the ESV Study Bible, but if you are looking for a thin Bible to carry with you in your bag, this is a great (beautiful!) option.

I hope that in the month of December you are reminded of your need and privelege to rest in Christ and His finished work over your own striving. This is my prayer for us! That as we do this, we would be pointed to Jesus Christ’s perfect work, His perfect life, and His perfect rightoeousness imputed to those of us in Christ Jesus. As a result, we have eternal hope because of our Saviour Who is with us; Immanuel!

Enjoy!
